Despite being a good dog food, Freshpet has had some recalls in the past. In June 2021, the brand recalled the Freshpet Select Small Dog bite-size Beef and Egg recipe with a sell-by date of 10/30/2021 due to potential contamination with salmonella bacteria. The contaminated product was accidentally shipped to retailers in a limited geographic area.

In June 2022, the brand recalled its FreshPet Select Fresh from the Kitchen Home cooked Chicken recipe due to potential salmonella contamination.
